| Back | What should 'we' do with Cwrt-y-Gollen now?
Cwrt-y-Gollen is a brownfield site because it was already developed as an army camp. But now it has closed. So should it be redeveloped as housing to help me the shortage of affordable homes (for local people)?

  What Do Planners Do? http://www.planning.org/aboutplanning/whatisplanning.htm
Professional planners help create a broad vision for the community. They also research, design, and develop programs; lead public processes; effect social change; perform technical analyses; manage; and educate. Some planners focus on just some of these roles, such as transportation planning, but most will work at many kinds of planning throughout their careers.

The basic element is the creation of a plan. Planners develop a plan through analysis of data and identification of goals for the community or the project. Planners help the community and its various groups identify their goals and form a particular vision.

5.3 Why do some people have more power than others to influence planning decisions?
  What influences planning decisions?

builderWhen we make decisions on planning applications we have to bear in mind:

"brownfield good, greenfield bad'.

  • national policies, set by the Department for Communities and Local Government
  • the Local Plan, decided by the BBNP in consultation with local people (this will soon be replaced with the Local Development Framework)

As well as these we also look at:

  • village design statements
  • environmental issues BBNP
  • listed buildings
  • conservation areas
  • flood risk
  • housing needs
  • job creation prospects

Money and power, education, confidence, being elected, official position, who you know, living locally, oral skills, sense of humour.

5.4 How might sustainable residential places be planned?
One way is for the planners to involve the local community in discussing their longer term planning strategies ... They can do this by holding local meetings ...

What were the main things the people in the Crickhowell (and Vale of Grwyney) areas told the BBNP to plan for ...
