Includes the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. (a)   High mountains in the South have steep slopes and there is little flat land. (b)
     
Very sunny and dry with droughts in summer. (c)   Main city is Naples. There are mainly small old towns. (d)
     
Traditionally most work has been in subsistence farming or as labourers with low wages. (e)   The temperatures are very high in the south in mid summer. (f)
     
Remote - a long way south and away from the rest of Europe with poor transport links. (g)   Traditional crops have included vines and olives - which can tolerate the droughts.
     
The Apennines are a line of hilly mountains making a backbone of Italy. (i)   During winter temperatures are colder and plants will not grow. (j)
     
Some of the low ground was marshy and mosquito ridden in the past. (k)   Many people in the south are elderly and state pensions are good in Italy. (l)
     
With modern irrigation cash crops like tomatoes and oranges can be produced and sold to the rest of Europe. (n)   Over 4 million people have left the South in 50 years because of a shortage of paid employment. (m)
     
The South tends to be very traditional, even backward and peoples' views change slowly. (n)   The soils are very poor and thin on the hilly slopes of southern Italy. (o)
     
Girls have found a bit more freedom / independence since new factories opened up in the South. They are less keen to just marry. (p)   The government has used grants and E. U. money to try to attract companies to open factories  in the South. (q)
