1960s First supermarkets develop in most U.K. towns    
     Late 1970s first large hypermarkets in Wales e.g. Asda at Merthyr.
1980s more and more Retail Parks on edge of towns. Planning restrictions reduced.    
    1990s Abergavenny gets an out of town Safeway (now Waitrose) despite public opposition.
1990s government policy changes  - now against out of town developments. Some big schemes continue to go ahead e.g. Cribbs Causeway 1998.    
    2005 Proposal to redevelop the IN TOWN cattle market site - a brownfield site.
2006 Plan mainly supporting a FOOD store and additional services like a library and a cinema.    
    2006 Proposal is for an Asda which is 60% non-food.
