Challenges of Living in a Built Environment (from Sept 2009)
| Back |
  Key question 1.2:
How does quality of life and standard of living vary in urban and rural areas?

  Learning Points:
How does Quality of Life vary across an MEDC city?
How does Quality of Life vary across an LEDC city?
How does Quality of Life vary between urban and rural areas in MEDCs?
How does Quality of Life vary between urban and rural areas in LEDCs?
What are the main types of housing areas in MEDC and LEDC cities?

  Starter:

  • Rank the QoL from 1 = best to 4=worst. Try to agree this with your partner and explain your reasons.
  • Which are in MEDCs and which are LEDCs?
  • Which are 'central' to the town and which are on the edge?
  • Try to suggest one likely good feature of the QoL and one likely bad feature of the QoL for each place.

A Model of Variations of Quality of Life from Urban to Rural Areas in MEDCs

Task: Explain this diagram to your partner - taking it in turns - and working outwards from the city centre (left) to the very rural areas (right). Say one good point and one bad point of living in each 'zone'.
Be ready to ask the teacher about any points you are unsure of.

A Map of Variations in Quality of Life in one MEDC City and its surrounding Rural Area

Task: Sketch this map showing the main housing areas of an MEDC city and labelling how quality of life varies from the centre to the edge. Write about 10 lines to explain your map.
Put these labels on the diagram: # newest housing; # rapid growth along main roads; # highest land values # cheaper land values # urban sprawl; # commuter village; # inner city around CBD.
Make a key using colours/shading to show: The CBD; the inner city; the suburbs; commuter village; Green Belt ; open countryside. ADD AN ARROW WITH A LABEL SHOWING HOW QoL VARIES FROM THE CENTRE TO THE EDGE.
