Rio : Barra de Tijuca
 | Back |
Barra - a new suburb about 20 kms south of Rio down the coast. Good Points:
  • safe - children can walk to school - security on appartment entrances
  • good public transport - a little 'hopper' bus.
  • plenty of leisure activities - sports and entertainments. Good facilities.
  • good quality housing - medium to high rise apartments
  • beach
  • no pollution or congestion
  • good roads and good schools
  • Shopping malls -' the California of South America'
  • young and go ahead with space to grow

Bad Points:
  • all very 'middle class' - not  a 'mixed' community.
  • a 'ghetto' of the rich
  • boring. Good for families and young children. Boring for young adults.
  • 'snobbish' - difficult if you are not wealthy (because everbody else is)

Barra is full of middle class families who have moved out from areas of Rio like the Zona Sul.

Counter-urbanisation (of the wealthy) has started in Rio. Counter-urbanisation is the movement of people away from cities to the surrounding countryside areas.
