| The
Cattle Market Proposal | Back | |
The market traders and shop keepers were very concerned at
possibly losing trade. They said that Abergavenny had enough
supermarkets already with Tesco and Waitrose and this Asda was
bigger than both those together. 1
As a central part of the Plan there would be a large new Asda
superstore with associated parking. This could be argued as
sustainable as it is within the town not out of town. 2
In 2005 Monmouthshire signed an agreement with Henry Boot
(Property Developers) and accepted their plan for redevelopment.
This plan would then go for public consultation. 3
The plan also suggested building a new library for the town
replacing the rather old existing library. Presumably this
would be 'state of the art' with ICT facilities. 4
There would also be room for some affordable housing for local
people. This could be useful for retired folk or for people
working in the town. 5
The cattle market is just north east of the centre of
Abergavenny. The cattle market could be moved to an out of town
site near main roads close to Raglan. 6
The site could then be redeveloped and Monmouthshire County
Council considered offers from various property developers
during 2004 - 2005. 7
The proposal also included a two screen cinema with seating for
about 250 people. This part of the scheme might be popular as it
improves the town's range of leisure services. 8
