The Exxon Valdez Affair Teacher Stuff
| Back |
I have an Exxon Valdez video clip so I might start off with this to give some general background coverage before we go to the 'Affair'. Or the kids will realise they can't possibly do a practice paper yet.

1. Start with the Practice Paper 36. It looks like a test but if you 'Submit Answer' or 'Give Up' you reveal the messages that get you started. (You could play in an ICT room every pupil for themself or as a whole class.) Whole class: build it up as an 'exam'/test situation and then eventually reveal it as fun. [The 'SMERSH' hyperlink does work (now) and it also it does if you use the top left option for 'further support']

2. The messages should take you to the interactive diagram (iDG) 34. this could be useful in their homework later. But for the spy story we need the hyperlink in the bottom right of the page where it says 'your mission is here 007'. This should take you on....

3. to a PowerPoint (which is also here and in the Year 8: Alaska Pages.) This gives 007 his/her mission. Which is to produce a report within two weeks, in whatever medium, covering location, causes, effects of Exxon Valdez disaster and a conclusion. I forget to stress the 'effects' bit in the task outline PowerPoint so this could be an extension for some.

4. The PowerPoint also has some jumbled words about shipping hazards and 007 is referred to the Movie 35. Get the kids to jot down the jumbled letters to help with the movie. The seven hazards in the movie are:

i) narrow shipping lanes, ii) mist/low cloud visibility iii) icebergs/growlers iv) big waves from gales v) tsunami from earthquake vi) reefs, running aground, rocks vii) human error, criminal negligence

5. Activities 33 and 32 help fix the learning. My classes take it on as homework afterwards. More resources in Y8: Alaska Pages

6. This is the plan which developed during Question Time one evening. It seems to work - let me know if you try it or if you find mistakes. email
