Memo to Crickhowell Tesco Express Project Group.
Tesco require a speedy response on this one. We need to find out public opinion about the possibility of a Tesco Express opening up in Crickhowell.

Step 1: Select your Team Leader or Project Manager (PM for short). The PM can allocate tasks fairly and can make sure everyone's ideas are considered and that we work as a team. If there is a dispute the PM can decide the matter.

Step 2: We need an agreed methodology to collect the required data - so that we all proceed in the same way and consider the same things - how are we going to do this? Let me know your team's suggestions. We'll have to design a questionnaire sheet. Remember the initial brief from Tesco:

We anticipate that there may be some local opposition to the proposal and would wish to instruct you to undertake a questionnaire of public opinion to the possibility of a Tesco Express store coming to Crickhowell. As it is such a rural community you may need to explain the concept of Tesco Express to the general public explaining how it is different to a general superstore.

So you don't waste your effort I'll let you know that I'm thinking about:
Step 3: Designing a questionnaire. Let's all design our own individually and then make a short list before making or choosing a final version that we will all use.

Useful background info. on questionnaires from: http://www.geography-site.co.uk/pages/skills/fieldwork/stats/ques.html

What sort of questions should we ask? What do we want to know?

Ok let me see your questionnaire design by next lesson.

Step 4: Having chosen a questionnaire design. Undertake our questionnaires. Remember to follow the RPS Risk Assessment procedures to the letter. Link

Fieldwork in schooltime:
  • Don't work alone. Either work with a partner or with a group nearby or have an older person to accompany you.
  • When approaching people in the street (in daylight) always be polite and don't get into arguments.
  • Don't forget everyday rules about crossing roads
  • Follow your teacher's advice and behave sensibly

Homework research

  • always ask your parents' permission
  • let them know where you are asking to go (e.g. to neighbours, friends or relatives). You could telephone call or email your target interviewees from home instead. But get permission from the bill payer first and make sure you have permission from your parent to contact these persons. Make sure you have your questions, a pen and your recording sheet ready before you start.
  • Don't approach strangers (especially after school)
  • If you go out carry a mobile and let an adult know when you should be back home.
  • You could survey people in school instead eg pupils, sixth formers, teachers, other staff.

Step 5: Process the data from the questionnaire into tables of information.

Step 6: Then choose techniques to represent the data, draw the graphs; then describe and interpret what they show.

Hope this sounds like a positive way forward
